All going well in the horse paddock...

by adriana 21. March 2010 13:13
Bounty (nicknamed Bouncy) - my stockhorse and James - thoroughbred, are doing fine. Well adjusted to the new home. It's been a good decision to move them to this place. So far so good. Horse dentist is booked for next week. They need their teeth filed every year. Bounty still bossing James and the farm cat around.  Bounty will be back into work after Easter. His injuries are heeled now. Initially I am only going to do Natural Horsemanship Pat Parelli 7 games with him and the round yard free style. He'll take time to get his fitness back. He is probably thinking he's retired now. Up for a surprise... And James is officially retired. He'll be 26 yo. this August. If I came to sadlle him up he'll probably run away LOL... He doesn't know what is to work anymore. Enjoying the good life...

Floppy sick

by adriana 21. March 2010 13:05
My poor little bunny - Floppy - has an abscess under his chin. It's huge. He is on antibiotic for the 2nd consecutive week. It's very messy to clean it. Initially once he started on his medication he was off his food but he started eating better now. He is still his normal self running around but I just hope it clears soon.

Is Puppy pre-school enough education for a dog?

by adriana 21. March 2010 12:50

I don't think Puppy pre-school is enough education for a dog in its entire life but that if all puppies could be given the opportunity to do a Puppy pre-school program followed by a dog juvenile course or a Level 1 Basic Manners, Obedience & Socialisation program, this would be such a great start for dog and dog owner in their life journey together. The 2 courses would provide strategies, life skills and knowledge for dog owner to handle their dog on the various situations that they are likely to encounter on their daily lives and ability to learn dog body language and what's good dog play and what is not appropriate dog interaction. It's sensational that so many dog owners are keen to start socialising and educating their puppies at such a young age but it's through continuos dog and owner education that they'll fell better prepared for the challenging dog 'adolescent' years that lay ahead.  Puppy school and a Level 1 Basics or juvenile course program just set the right foundation from the start.

DOG WALKING

by adriana 4. March 2010 06:23

If ever considering employing the services of a dog walker please consider the level of experience and qualification of the person. There are a few dog walking/ pet sitting  services out there but very few are run by capable knowledgeable people. Anyone can set up a service and start copying what a stablished business do but can you imagine a person that has never worked with dogs before and who doesn't understand how dogs learn and their body language around others dogs and people, how dogs should meet and greet politely - if they start taking 4 dogs out to off leash areas what could go wrong? Many things really, potential for disaster: dogs getting bitten and getting into fights, running off into the road, not coming back on recall, developing serious bad habits on lead and off leash like doing rough play with a more timid dog - if this timid dog is already at the dog park. And on lead walking - all people walk dogs but only a few know how to walk dogs properly, without dog pulling on lead, which type of equipment to fit dog properly so he doesn't pull, how to make dog to walk close to the person leg and not miles away in front, or stopping to sniff everywhere. So it's not anyone that would do to walk your dog. PET PALS has walked dogs for 9 years now and I had never had 1 dog getting bitten by another or have had a insurance claim ever. It's all been plain sailing and dogs have a lot of fun. I can read them like a book by now. I know when arousal escalates and it's time for a break during play, to give a bit more space to a particular dog or dogs that shouldn't be mixed together. They all learn good skills and their manners improve considerably overall, including lead walking and their off leash recall. So I provide much more than a simple walking service.
